FOOTBALL: Davis finishes eighth in Heisman voting

Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis was not one of the players invited to New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation, but that did not stop people from voting for him.

Davis finished in eighth place in the Heisman voting on Saturday, receiving one second-place vote and eight third-place votes.

Davis was the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year and had a conference-best 164 passing efficiency rating. He also had the second most passing yards in the MAC with 3,446.

The No. 22 Cardinals (12-1, 8-0 MAC) finished the regular season undefeated and were ranked No. 12 in the BCS standings before losing to the University at Buffalo in the MAC Championship Game. Ball State will play the University of Tulsa in the GMAC bowl Jan. 6, 2009 in Mobile, Ala.

Davis was the only player who finished in the Heisman voting top 10 that did not receive a first place vote.

The University of Okalahoma quarterback Sam Bradford won the Heisman Trophy with 1,726 votes - 122 votes ahead of the University of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy who finished in second place.
