Ex-BSU student's plea hearing continued

The guilty plea hearing for a former Ball State University student arrested in connection with a 2007 assault has been continued for the second time.

Ashley Kirkman, 21, is scheduled to plea to Delaware County Judge Robert Barnet on Jan. 22 in Circuit Court 3, according to court documents.

Kirkman was charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury - a Class C felony with a standard prison sentence of two years - after she and four other then-Ball State students were arrested on suspicion of attacking an Ivy Tech student at an off-campus party last year.

The other three women charged in the beating case - Amanda Polson, Kari Streib and Rene Whiteley - accepted plea bargains on Class D charges of criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury. Polson began serving a six-month sentence in Delaware County Jail in October. Streib and Whiteley have sentencing hearings set for later this month.

Kirkman was originally scheduled to stand trial in October, but her court date was moved to Monday. Her attorney filed for the second continuance last week.
