CROSS COUNTRY: Runner receives MAC academic award

A Ball State University cross country runner was honored Wednesday for her performance on and off of the track.

Junior Sarah Kehe was one of 18 athletes named to the 2008 Women's Cross Country Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. The team was chosen by faculty athletic representatives at schools in the conference.

Kehe, who also swims for Ball State, was the Cardinals' second-fastest 6K runner this season with a time of 23:16.2 at the Great Lakes Regional and 23:01.6 at the Pre-Nationals. The exercise science major is second on the team academically, with a 3.51 GPA.

Kehe finished 38th overall out of 101 runners at the 2008 MAC Cross Country Championships. Her time of 18:18.4 was second best for the Cardinals.

Senior Vanessa Gilbert and junior Lisa Arrowsmith also were named to the women's Academic Honorable Mention Team.

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA and participated in 50 percent of their team's contests. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year are not eligible for the award.

The number of honorees is set for each sport or is 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever number is greater. The other nominees are recognized as honorable mention selections.
