Student Voluntary Services Angel Tree program proved the Christmas spirit is alive at Ball State University.
Kathy Smith, associate director of student life, said 174 kids from Delaware County were sponsored by the program, about twice as many as last year. The children participating in the program have been nicknamed angels. Smith said despite the high number of angels this year, they were all taken within the first week.
Most years, SVS experiences a problem with volunteers returning gifts by the deadline, Smith said.
However, this year 11 additional volunteers stopped in after all of the angels were registered and provided supplemental donations to ensure each child had at least three presents, Smith said.
Brandi Terry, Student Government Association representative for SVS, worked on the committee for the Angel Tree program.
Terry said she can empathize with the kids because as a child, she was on her hometown's Angel Tree list for several years.
"It's a very good project with a very good message," Terry said. "It's awesome to know that someone cares, and to know the Ball State community cares about the Muncie community."
Next Tuesday a group of volunteers from SVS will wrap all of the gifts before they are distributed to the local families.
