No increase in holiday arrests

Police say numbers steady despite more Halloween foot traffic

Despite local law enforcement agencies increasing the number of officers on patrol during Halloween weekend, there were no reported increases in arrests.

Gene Burton, Ball State University's director of public safety, said the arrest numbers were normal for any weekend. Police arrested nine people from Thursday to Sunday compared to 10 during the same period a week earlier.

Burton said Halloween hasn't given the University Police Department problems in the past. It gets more calls, he said, but arrest numbers have been constant.

Cpl. Brian Lang of Indiana State Excise Police said the amount of foot traffic during the weekend was more than normal. He attributed that to warm weather on a holiday weekend.

Excise issued nine citations for minor possession of alcohol Friday and three Saturday, Lang said, which is what he expected. The department wrote five additional tickets for traffic violations. He said he thought excise wrote more tickets last Halloween.

Lang said the weekend went well and most people were cooperative.

Muncie Police Department, Delaware County Sheriffs and Indiana State Police couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday.
