FOOTBALL: Notes from the Cardinals' quest for a perfect season

  • Ball State University has opened the season with 11 straight victories, which is the best start for a Ball State team in the 84 seasons of football at the school.
  • This year's run of 11 straight victories is the fourth-longest winning streak in school history in any sport.
  • Ball State's football program has had two 10-win seasons in 84 campaigns, and head coach Brady Hoke has been a part of both, including as a player on the 1978 team, which posted a 10-1 overall record.
  • The last time Ball State started the Mid-American Conference season 7-0 was the 1978 campaign when the Cardinals won all eight of its MAC games.
  • Ball State's national rankings this season are the first in school history.
  • Ball State is one of five undefeated teams in 2008 of the 119 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the nation.
  • Ball State's 11-game winning streak is tied for the fourth-longest in the nation.
  • The Cardinals have gone 44 straight games without being shut out, which is the third-longest stretch in Ball State history. The last time a Ball State team did not score in a game was Oct. 1, 2005, at Boston College.
  • The closest an opponent has come to the Cardinals was the 7-point, 31-24, Ball State win against Central Michigan University on Wednesday.
  • Ball State has won its 10 games by an average of 22.2 points per contest.
  • Ball State's defense has allowed 20 points or fewer in seven straight games and eight times this season.
  • For only the third time this season, Ball State fell behind at Central Michigan by a 10-7 margin. The Cardinals tied the game 10-10 at the half and continued their streak of never falling behind after halftime. Ball State fell behind 3-0 at Miami University before taking a 7-3 advantage and never trailing in the game again. The Cardinals also trailed 3-0 at Indiana University before taking a 7-3 lead and never trailing again.
  • Davis passed his brother, Jose Davis, on the MAC's career chart for pass attempts in a career and is now 13th.
  • Ian McGarvey made four extra points at Central Michigan and has now made a school record 63 straight dating back to last season.
  • Lewis rushed for a career-high 177 yards at Central Michigan and now has 1,450 rushing yards this season. He has compiled the 12th 1,000-yard rushing season in Ball State history. He is the eighth player in school history to have logged a 1,000-yard campaign.
  • Lewis has nine 100-yard rushing games this season and nine in his career.
  • Lewis has 17 rushing touchdowns this season, which is the second-highest single-season total in Ball State history. His 17 total touchdowns is also the second best in school history.
  • Daniel Ifft caught his third touchdown reception this season at Central Michigan and the fourth of his career.
  • Louis caught his fourth touchdown reception this season at Central Michigan and the ninth of his career. It is also marked the second two-touchdown reception game of his career.
  • Freshman Briggs Orsbon caught his fifth touchdown pass of the season at Central Michigan.
