Alcohol arrests rise with undefeated team

Indiana State Excise Police cited 19 people for alcohol violations at Ball State University's football game against Northern Illinois University on Wednesday.

Cpl. Brian Lang said police issued more tickets Wednesday than at any other Ball State football game this year. He said excise issued an average of eight to 10 citations at previous games.

The department cited 18 minors for either minor consumption or possession of alcohol, and one adult was ticketed for inducing a minor to consume alcohol. Police took one minor to jail for his level of intoxication.

Lang said the mild weather and the football team's undefeated record caused the amount of tickets.

"I think that [the football game] drew more of a crowd and kind of got everybody in the spirit for the occasion," he said.

Six officers patrolled the tailgating area across Tillotson Avenue from Scheumann Stadium, he said.

As of Thursday, Lang said, excise police planned to have at least as many officers patrolling Ball State's final home game Nov. 25.
