WOMEN'S GOLF: Cards take third in Akron

BSU remains in same postion on final day; Kelly finishes second

Finishing exactly where it started the day, the Ball State University women's golf team kept its third place spot at the 54-hole Zippy Invitational with a team score of 958.

Eastern Michigan won the tournament, shooting 919 as a team, and the University of Akron came in second with a 943.

"It was a tough day overall," coach Katherine Mowat said. "The conditions were more challenging than yesterday, and the pin locations were as hard as they come."

Sophomore Brittany Kelly tied for second overall shooting a 230 (14-over-par), 10 strokes behind the leader.

"Brittany's score was great for her individually as well as her team," Mowat said.

In the final round, Kelly shot an eight-over-par. She had an even par on the front nine, but struggled on the back.

"I played decent until the end," Kelly said. "Once I got to the back nine I just let my guard down and the course got to me."

This course itself caused some problems for the Cardinals, Mowat said.

"We weren't getting a good position off the tees," she said. "Our driving accuracy wasn't great, which made it more challenging."

Freshman KC Cain played consistently by shooting a 78-79-79. Overall she finished in ninth with a score of 236 (20-over-par).

"KC is a solid golfer," Mowat said. "She didn't play a great round, but her worst was only a 79. As long as she can minimize the damage and shoot in the 70's, she will be fine."

The team had a disappointing day as many of the players shot in the mid-80s, Mowat said.

"Individually we struggled," Mowat said. "Brittany played well, but didn't have all of her team backing her up."

The team now has to put this behind them and prepare for the Hawkeye Invitational this Saturday and Sunday.

"We have one day of practice, and then we have to get ready to leave on Thursday," Kelly said.

The Hawkeye Invitational is another 54-hole tournament.

"We have to have a quick turnaround and be mentally tough," Mowat said. "We are hoping to perform the way we are capable of playing."
