Leaving for the Indianapolis International Airport earlier this week, coach Katherine Mowat thought her team would be able to win the Pat Bradley Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla.
After the first two rounds, though, she said she now is hoping the Ball State University women's golf team can end its fall season with one good round.
Ball State shot a 617 during Monday's rounds and is in 10th place out of 13 teams at the invitational, which concludes with the final 18 holes today.
"We are not in contention to win," Mowat said. "We just need to play our game and end the season on a good note. We are not feeling any pressure and we need to go out and play solid golf."
Prior to this tournament, Ball State beat three Big Ten team to win the Hawkeye Invitational on Oct. 5. The Cardinals entered the Pat Bradley Invitational as the third highest ranked team in the 13-team field.
Mowat said the three weeks off from Ball State's last event was not the reason her team struggled. She also said the course was set up fair and playing it wasn't difficult.
Brittany Kelly shot a team-best 1-over-par through the first two rounds and is tied for fifth place -¡- eight strokes behind first place and one stroke out of second place.
Mowat said it would be difficult for Kelly to win but it was not impossible for her to comeback.
"It's her competitive spirit and nature," Mowat said. "She just dials it on that pin."
