Smoking issues and juicycampus.com were main topics of discussion during this week's Student Government Association meeting.
During Wednesday's meeting, senators met in their respective caucuses and committees. Below is what they mentioned:
Caucus Reports:
On Campus: Chairwoman Beth Cahill said they contacted Cathy Bickel, associate director of Housing and Residence Life, who said she did not want suggestion boxes in residence halls because there was not enough space and they would get stolen. The caucus postponed its lighting tour until after Fall Break, Cahill said. She also said the Studebaker West Complex smoking sections were near a tree by the residence hall so the smoke would go into people's windows.
Off Campus: Chairman Henry Mortensen said he would meet with Sue Weller, director of Facilities Business Services and Transportation in Facilities Planning and Management, about running buses down Riverside Avenue by the fraternity houses.
Organizational: Sam Osborne said Student Voluntary Services' week of events was next week.
Committee Reports:
Academic Affairs: Chairwoman Mallory Winkler said they wanted to contact Provost Terry King about getting midterm grades posted online. The committee also was waiting on e-mails from administrators and other people about online professor evaluations. She said the committee also wanted to research getting a students' minors added to their DAPRs.
Community/Environmental Affairs: Chairwoman Leah Ruble said the Campus Cleanup Day would be from 10 a.m. until noon Nov. 8 at the smoking area in front of LaFollette Complex. A breakfast at American Buffet in LaFollette would precede the event.
Diversity and Multicultural Affairs: Chairwoman Brandi Terry said she met with the Multicultural Council and there would be a music and food festival after the council's multicultural forum at 7 p.m. on Nov. 18.
Governmental Affairs and Student Awareness: Chairman Timothy Dykiel said he e-mailed student government presidents at Butler, Indiana University and Purdue University and talked to Student Legal Services attorney John Connor about juicycampus.com and finding ways to stop the site. He said the committee was working on a template to send to U.S. congressmen and senators about the site. Dykiel also said Connor suggested SGA write a resolution to juicycampus.com saying the organization does not support the site.
Student Safety: Chairwoman Michelle Voss said the bushes by the Cowpath as students walk toward Neely Avenue were cut down so it was easier to look for cars.
Student Services: Chairwoman Nicole Akey said she spoke with Director of Dining Jon Lewis and he said near semester break there would be an upgrade in software so it would be faster when ordering and paying for food. He said Dining also was considering not having students show identification when using their credit or debit cards to order food.
