OUR VIEW: Commence the carryout

AT ISSUE: Legislators should reconsider laws prohibiting alcohol sales on Sunday

Flash back to Sunday night's football lineup on either the local broadcast stations or ESPN.

Your friends begin to arrive for what looks to be the second chance the Colts have at winning a game this season, an obvious cause for celebration.

As the last guests arrive and the barbecued chicken wings and chips are consumed, one of the guests requests a frosty, domestic beer.

Now flash to your devoid-of-beer fridge.

The most epic of party fouls.

This scene and many others are brought to you by laws that linger in Indiana's code from the prohibition days.

Indiana is now one of 15 states that prohibit alcohol and liquor sales on Sundays, according to Hoosiers for Beverage Choices, a lobbyist group trying to get the law changed.

Ten thousand Hoosiers have already signed a petition requesting legislators to consider repealing or revising the laws that prevent the sale of carryout alcohol.

Among the issues that need to be considered are the loss of revenue to states bordering Indiana with lesser or no laws prohibiting alcohol sales on Sunday. However, another concern that arises is whether the liquor stores could afford to stay open on Sunday, especially considering that the same beverages are for sale in most grocery stores.

Possible solutions to the latter issue include allowing grocery stores to sell only beer and wine and leaving the liquor sales to those who do it best - the locally owned and operated liquor stores.

Ultimately, the concerns boil down to how much governing you want your government to do.

If you can see a point to prohibiting alcohol sales on Sunday, continue life as you know it and plan for alcohol consumption accordingly.

However, if you don't see the point in adhering to remnants of an amendment that has been repealed, sign the petition.

The most we can do is implore our legislators to listen to our concerns in hopes of bringing a little more revenue to local business owners.

And bring a little buzz to our Sunday nights.
