After a two-week vacation from competitive play, the Ball State University men's golf team sprang back into action Monday in the Xavier Invitational at the Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio.
The Cardinals are tied for sixth place out of 20 teams.
In rounds one and two of the 54-hole tournament, Ball State shot a team-combined score of 572, which is 12 strokes behind first place Eastern Kentucky University.
"We didn't play particularly well in the morning, but we moved up in the afternoon rounds and got those low scores we needed," coach Mike Fleck said. "We have to keep moving forward and be competitive with the other MAC schools. We just have to continue to be aggressive and see what happens."
The 20-team tournament features four other Mid-American Conference teams: the University of Akron, Bowling Green State University, Ohio University and the University of Toledo. After 36 holes, Ball State is the best MAC school.
Senior Brian Maurer, who leads the Cardinals this season with a 73.75 average, is the top golfer. Shooting a 72 and 71, Maurer is tied for 26th place individually. In addition, Anthony Novak, who is competing as an individual, shot a 141 -¡- one stroke better than Maurer.
The final 18 holes will be played today.
