Many students have been wondering "What's with the 'Red, White + U'?"
The Homecoming Steering Committee selected the slogan as a way to appeal to individual students on campus, integrate the Ball State University theme that incorporates a plus sign in its advertising and tie it all together with the upcoming election, Publicity Chairman Jennifer Regnier said.
"Teams brainstormed, and we found favorites," Regnier said. "(The Committee) tries to find a theme that encompasses what's popular (each) year, and this is an election year."
Although the steering committee may have selected what they thought was the best option, not all students are aware of the full meaning behind the words splashed over a black and white pigskin in the logo.
"I think it kind of involves Ball State University, and it personalizes (Homecoming) more with students," advertising major Brandon Rowe said. "It's still kind of vague, but it works."
Steering Committee General Chairwoman Alexandra Garritano believes the theme worked well in attracting students to Homecoming throughout the week and expects many parade participants will make use of the election idea with their floats.
"One group (used) the idea of the two candidates (John McCain and Barack Obama) in their dance for Air Jam," Garritano said. "They planned on going back and forth like McCain and Obama in their skit."
A few groups applied for the Air Jam contest Thursday night with patriotic songs such as "American Girl" by Tom Petty, but only one was allowed to perform, as Air Jam participants are selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
"I don't think I have really run into people not understanding the theme," Garritano said. "If people don't understand it's about the election, then they definitely get the BSU idea. (The theme) has worked out really, really well so far."
