After the first day of its eight-day online auction, the Cardinal Varsity Club has gained $2,000 for the Ball State University athletics department.
As of 11 p.m. Monday, 40 of the auction's 111 items had received at least one bid, with the bids totaling $2,000.
The Cardinal Varsity Club auction is an annual event to raise money for the athletics department's general fund and scholarship program. Items available in this auction include dinners with Ball State coaches, sporting event tickets, sports memorabilia, a week stay in St. Maarten and tickets to "Late Show with David Letterman".
Jerry Peirson, executive director of Cardinal Varsity Club, said he would like this auction to raise about $20,000. In the past the club has raised about $10,000 each year through this event, but Peirson said $20,000 is a reachable goal because there are more items this year.
"It all depends on how many items you get and how interested they are," he said.
The most expensive item is a Ball State golf bag, and 14 items have more than $50 bids as of Monday night. However, the dinners with President Jo Ann Gora and dinner with athletics director Tom Collins, each requiring at least a $100 minimum bid, have not received any bids.
Along with alumni support, Peirson said he hopes Ball State students will participate in the auction, which ends 11:59 p.m. Nov. 3.
"I really would like for them to look at our Web site and see if there is anything they like," he said. "They know what is going on and their help raising money would be great."
