Club to check tire pressure

Students for a Sustainable Campus will help students save money by improving their gas mileage Friday.

Co-Vice President Maggie MacNeil said SSC will be helping students in Scheumann Stadium's parking lot check their tire pressure from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday.

A lot of people don't know how to check their pressure and don't even think about it, she said, but it can make a noticeable difference on gas mileage depending on the car.

MacNeil said when a tire doesn't have enough air, more of its surface touches the ground, creating more friction. More friction forces the engine to work harder, reducing gas mileage, she said.

"Since it's simple to do." she said, "there's no reason to waste gas or money."

MacNeil said the activity targets students who will be moving their cars for Saturday's football game.

Checking tire pressure is especially important during the transition from one season to another, she said. Temperature drops or rises affect tire pressure, and air should be added or let out depending on the temperature.

SSC will also give other tips and tricks on how to improve gas mileage and save money.

MacNeil said the club was designed to improve sustainability on campus. SSC has does activities every year that help the environment and educate people about what they can do to help keep it clean.
