Costumed teams race down Riverside

Theta Chi, Alpha Phi Alpha take Bed Races' top awards

Teams of pirates, babies, Quail Men and more hurtled down Riverside Avenue at noon Friday as part of the Homecoming celebration at Ball State University.

Sociology major Sarah Austin competed in the Bed Races for the first time as a member of the Park Hall pirates.

"It was a great day for the races," she said. "The weather's so much better than last year and there's a great crowd supporting us."

Junior telecommunications major Kimbra Essex was one of the spectators at the event. She cheered on the team from the Black Student Association but said she preferred the view from the sidelines.

This year's races featured bed crashes that knocked over the starting official and kept bystanders alert.

Despite the faulty wheels, Jennifer Regnier, publicity chairwoman for the Homecoming Committee, said the event was a success.

"We had an outstanding crowd this year," she said. "The weather was so much better because Homecoming was earlier this year. We also had a lot of groups that contributed. I think more teams participated than usual."

Forty-four teams gathered on Riverside Avenue to compete this year.

Regnier said there were more independent teams competing than in previous years.

Alpha Phi Alpha, dressed as Quail Men, won in the category of best costume. Theta Chi won the Greek Male category and were the overall winners of this year's Bed Races.
