Almost two months after he was claimed off waivers, former Ball State University pitcher Bryan Bullington was called up by the Cleveland Indians to start Saturday.
Bullington, who is the Cardinals' all-time leader in wins and strikeouts, will start the second game of a day-night doubleheader Saturday in Cleveland against the Kansas City Royals. The start will be the right-hander's debut with the Indians, the team which claimed him off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates July 10.
The Pirates drafted Bullington with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft. He was the first Ball State and Mid-American Conference athlete to be taken No. 1 overall in a professional draft.
Bullington made his MLB debut with the Pirates on Sept. 18, 2005 against the Cincinnati Reds. On Sept. 6, 2007, Bullington returned to the Pirates and lost to the Cardinals 16-4 in St. Louis.
Last year Bullington appeared in five games for the Pirates, including three starts, as he went 0-3 on the season. For the year he had an earned run average of 5.29, allowed 24 hits and five walks in 17 innings of work.
Bullington is still looking for his first win at the major-league level. He has a career ERA of 5.89 and an 0-3 record.
In Triple-A this season, the 27 year old had a 5-9 record with 107 strikeouts in 128 innings for the Buffalo Bisons and Indianapolis Indians.
Another former Ball State player, Brad Snyder is on the Indian's 40-man roster but is not on the active roster. The outfielder is playing for the Indians' Triple-A team, the Buffalo Bisons.
