Dear Gigolo Joe:I'm living in an apartment with these two other girls. Don't get the wrong impression: nothing is happening between us. We have a pretty good friendship, but I hate their stupid cats. There are three of them, and they aren't those "miracle cats" that can use the toilet to go to the bathroom. These cats are as dumb as they come, and I just can stand it anymore. What can I do to live with these animals? I hate cats.
Dear I hate cats:The cats are not yours, so it's not like you can just kick them out. You don't have to like the cats; you just have to learn to live with them.First, close the door of your room. Even though the apartment has cats, it doesn't mean your room should have cats. And, when your roommates aren't around, maybe you can ask them to put the cats in their rooms. There are ways to coexist with cats, but that doesn't mean you have to enjoy it. Just be polite with these animals for the time you should live there. But remember: If you treat the cats poorly, the roommates will treat you poorly.
Dear Gigolo Joe:I'm living with a girl who doesn't want any boys in the room. Every time one might come to the room or drop in, she gets really nervous. She starts to get the jitters, and it's pretty noticeable. Later, she made it a rule not to have boys at our place. If that's what makes her feel better, I guess it's OK, but I have more friends who are guys than girls. What can I do? I miss my boys.
Dear I miss my boys:It seems to me that you have to respect your roommate's wishes. It is a roommate rule that you don't hear about every day, but that doesn't mean you should ignore it. Instead of having guy friends come to your place, go to theirs. You could always tell your friends about your situation, but not to make fun of your roommate. Instead, let them know and understand what you are going through. Hopefully, they will understand and give you a ride back to your place after hanging out.
Dear Gigolo Joe:OK, get this: I had my friend's futon for a few weeks. He was out of town, and he let me have it for a while. But, my roommate jumped on it or something and broke the futon. How you break a futon, I don't know. All I know is that I have to deal with it. I don't know how to tell my friend it's broken or my roommate that she needs to pay for it. Could you help me out? Broken futon.
Dear Broken Futon:I know it's hard to tell your roommate, but you can't let her think she doesn't need to pay for the futon she broke. Once you tell her, she should not give you any problems. As for your friend, just tell him what happened, and I'm sure he will understand. He could get upset, but knowing that he will get a replacement futon should calm him down.
