WOMEN'S GOLF: Cardinals in lead after day one

Ball State in position for 2nd straight win; Kelly has best score

A week after winning the Butler Spring Invitational, the Ball State University women's golf team is in position to win again.

Ball State leads the Tina Barrett Longwood Invite after the first day of competition, which was shortened because of rain, by seven strokes.

"We played really well today we put together a great round," coach Katherine Mowat said. "Conditions were far from easy, conditions were reminiscent of Butler with the cold and added rain."

Ball State has more than half of its golfers among the top six individuals after the first day. Brittany Kelly is in first place overall with a 74 through the first round. Kristy O'Connor is two strokes behind Kelly and tied for third while Paige Esford is tied for sixth with a 77.

"I think it's awesome," Kelly said, "having three scores in the 70s in the conditions we had to play today."

Amy Roberts and Sarah Windlan rounded out the scores for Ball State. Roberts shot an 81, which put her in a tie for 22nd, while Windlan shot an 84, which put her in a tie for 33rd.

With the rain Monday, the two-day invitational was shortened from 54 holes to 36.

"My team wanted to play," Mowat said. "We all wanted to keep playing, but it was just impossible with the conditions."

Each team began playing the second round and got five or six holes in, Mowat said, before play was suspended. The second round will pick up where the golfers left off Monday, she said.

Mowat said it is the first time she has ever experienced an event when a round was suspended one day and continued the next. Although the teams do not know how the other teams fared through the start of the second round, Mowat said, she thinks her team is in good position. Everyone on her team was happy with how they were playing in the second round, she said.

Although Ball State is in good position after the first day of competition, Mowat said, the invitational is still far from complete.

"I think we'll maintain," she said, "but I always say that with caution because anything can happen."
