No fines yet for smoking ban

Two weeks after Ball State University implemented its smoking ban, the Office of Bursar's and Loan Administration has yet to receive a fine as of Monday afternoon.

Kay Bales, vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students, said there have been no reported citations or complaints about the smoking ban.

"Things have gone as I have expected," Bales said. "People are respectful of the policy. ... We'll continue to alert people to the policy, particularly as we have new people come on campus as we have visitors."

The ban's implementation is complete, she said, but the university will continue to offer cessation classes and alert the campus about the prohibitions.

The Board of Trustees approved the ban in December, and the implementation was March 17. Fines for smoking outside one of the 12 designated areas cost $50.
