Sen. Barack Obama will open a regional office in Muncie, which could lead to the candidate visiting the city in the near future, according to Obama campaign workers.
The Obama campaign announced Monday that Muncie will be one of 10 cities in Indiana in which a regional campaign office will open.
Nick Kimball, Indiana spokesman for the Obama campaign, said Muncie's new office could mean the senator will visit the city before Indiana's primaries in May.
"It's definitely a possibility," Kimball said. "The senator is going to be competing very aggressively across the entire state ... [but] there's nothing specific yet when Obama will return."
Ball State University senior Josh PeConge, who volunteers for the Obama campaign, said he has been working with a campaign staff member to find an office. They are looking into renting space near The Warehouse in the Village, PeConge said.
Kimball said the Obama campaign would officially announce the location of the 10 offices in the next few days after leases are signed.
The Obama campaign plans to open more offices, which will serve as satellites for the regional offices, Kimball said, but he did not know how many there would be.
"We're looking at how best to organize it," he said. "The will be several more all over the state. There's Democrats everywhere - all over the state, all over the country ... We're not just selecting areas that are traditionally Democratic."
After the Muncie office opens, PeConge said, staff and volunteers will begin campaigning door-to-door in the area.
One campaign focus will be to have Ball State students register to vote in Delaware County, he said.
