Trials set in battery case

Former students to go before county judge in late July

Three Ball State University-affiliated women arrested in connection with an assault at a party will return to court to face battery charges this summer, the Delaware County Clerk's Office said Tuesday.

A fourth woman who was arrested in connection with the same incident will have her initial hearing on Thursday, according to the Clerk's Office.

Former Ball State students Rene Whiteley, Ashley Kirkman and Amanda Polson have jury trial dates set for late July, with pre-trial conferences scheduled in June, according to the Clerk's Office.

Former Ball State student Kari Streib's attorney requested a continuance from her original initial hearing date, and it has been rescheduled for Thursday, according to the Clerk's Office.

Deputy Prosecutor Judi Calhoun said in a February interview Alysse Popov, who was also arrested in connection with the assault, would not be charged at that time.

The women were arrested in October at a party where one of them had an argument with Muncie resident Christina Elslinger about her boyfriend, according to police reports. The group of women attacked Elslinger, whose boyfriend then pulled the assailants off her, according to reports.

Investigator Jami Brown of the Muncie Police Department said in an October interview the women bragged about the fight on Facebook after the incident.

According to the Clerk's Office, the three cases will be in Delaware County Circuit Court 3 where Judge Robert Barnet will preside.

Calhoun said the four women were charged with battery with serious bodily injury, a Class C felony.

According to the Indiana Code, if the women are convicted, they could receive two to eight years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. The recommended prison sentence is four years, according to the Indiana Code.
