Steering Committee accepting nominations for King and Queen

Clubs can nominate candidates for $35

The Cardinals' Homecoming game might be half a year away, but students who envision the crown and its glory have a week left to decide whether they want to pursue that dream.

Ball State University's Homecoming Steering Committee is accepting nominations until April 2 for the 2008 Homecoming King and Queen candidates.

Michelle Johnson, Homecoming Steering Committee co-adviser, said the committee sent e-mails to student organizations the week before Spring Break explaining the nomination process.

Each club or organization can nominate one king and one queen, she said.

Sponsorship of one candidate costs $35, but sponsorship of two candidates is at a reduced combination price of $50, Johnson said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the committee had received four nominations, she said, but she isn't worried because most entries come in at the last minute.

Last year, 39 men and 46 women were nominated for Homecoming King and Queen, Johnson said. She expects a similar number of candidates this year, she said.

To be eligible for candidacy, students must be enrolled at Ball State for Fall Semester and be able to attend all mandatory meetings, Johnson said.

Faculty King and Queen candidates are nominated through a separate process that will begin in mid-April, she said.

Junior Mary Ann Clark, royalty chairman, said the faculty candidates are nominated after the student candidates because the student royalty nominations are more traditional.

"[The faculty court] is not taken as seriously as the students are," Clark said. "It's more for fun."

The coronation of Homecoming King and Queen recognizes students who spend hours supporting Ball State and spreading school spirit, she said.

"People don't understand that candidates are required to attend these Homecoming Week events," she said. "They are a great help to have around."

Because this fall's Homecoming Week of Events is about three weeks earlier than last year's, deadlines seem to come a lot quicker, Clark said.

"It's just getting people to take it seriously earlier," she said. "We've just got to buckle down and get all the forms and requests in on time."

Students will have the opportunity to vote for Homecoming Royalty candidates beginning Sept. 2. Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at Air Jam on Sept. 25.

Royalty nominationAll nomination forms are due by 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 2. Completed forms can be brought to the Homecoming Office in the Alumni Center.
