Senators of SGA look to fill more seats

School supplies, stop signs discussed during meeting

With several seats still unfilled, the Ball State University Student Government Association met Wednesday to discuss issues being worked on and yet to get started. Throughout the meeting senators urged their peers to look for constituents to join SGA so more students could be represented.

Meetings normally take about one and one-half hours, but after short caucus and committee meetings, it only lasted an hour.

Below is a breakdown of what each caucus and committee reported:

CAUCUS REPORTS:

On-Campus: Chairwoman Michelle Voss said she and her caucus hoped to get at least three new SGA members and write at least one piece of legislation.

Off-Campus: Caucus Secretary David Voelker said the caucus was working on getting a blogging system started so off-campus students could be informed about things happening on campus. He said the Division of Student Affairs wanted to have a barbecue for off-campus students to get them on campus and see what things Ball State offers. He also mentioned having a pamphlet sent to off-campus students so they know what things Muncie offers in case they stay here during Spring Break. The pamphlet also would include safety tips.

At-Large: Chairman Frank Hood said Dining told him students can now use credit cards at all cash registers. He also said there are some vending machines that accept Cardinal Cash, but more should be available in a few months. He also wanted to start legislation to get computers into the Health Center, but it would have to go through University Senate to help get funding for them. The last thing Hood said to the senators during his report was he was looking into getting reduced parking meter prices outside of the Art and Journalism Building. If that was not an option he said he would see if the meters could be changed so students would not have to pay after 5 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. like it is now.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Academic Affairs: Chairman Sam Godsey said he was working on drafting professor feedback forms that students could fill out during the semester if there are problems.

Diversity and Multicultural Affairs: Chairwoman Ciara Wells said she there would be a Multicultural Late Nite but volunteers and co-sponsorship were needed. The event would be "Around the World Late Nite - Part Deux" on March 1.

Student Safety: Chairwoman Carrie Cozad said she e-mailed Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations at Facilities Planning and Management, about having stop signs at the LaFollette Complex parking lot when turning onto McKinley Avenue. Cozad said she had not heard from Lowe, and if he did not respond in a couple days, she would e-mail him again. She also said students were concerned about some of the roads and sidewalks near campus. Because the roads are not campus property, she said, SGA could not do anything but she would contact the county engineer and inform him students had concerns. She said she also would ask the county engineer if the potholes on Bethel Avenue could be fixed.

Student Services: Chairman Frank Hood said he heard from Director of Dining Jon Lewis about getting school supplies in Bookmark Café. Hood said he was told that could not happen because there would be no profit. He said he spoke with Dean of University Libraries Arthur Hafner about putting supplies at the library desk, but he was told the employees could not handle money. Hafner suggested he look into getting a vending machine that would sell supplies, so Hood said he would research that.

Credentials Board: Chairwoman Mandy Mills said two Off-Campus Caucus seats needed to be filled. She also said two graduate student, six freshman and two regular seats were open for the At-Large Caucus.
