Departments have uneven arrest results

Muncie, state police increase patrols; UPD has regular amount

Police departments experienced uneven results in the number of arrests they made during Muncie Gras this weekend.

Gene Burton, director of public safety for Ball State University, said the police department arrested nine people, which is about average compared to recent weeks, but the department did not increase patrols during Muncie Gras.

"To be honest, really, looking at the past month, it's not really any higher than any other weekend," Burton said. "It was pretty much normal stuff. No [officers] were downtown. All were on or around campus."

Traffic Sgt. Bruce Qualls of the Muncie Police Department said the department arrested eight people on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and three or four were downtown. On average, Muncie police arrest two or three people on that charge during weekends, Qualls said.

There were 11 extra Muncie officers patrolling for drunk drivers during the weekend, Qualls said.

The officers patrolled Muncie, Daleville, Yorktown and Delaware County, he said.

Sgt. Rod Russell of the Indiana State Police Department said the department increased DWI patrols during the weekend, but it was not in direct connection with Muncie Gras.

The department made six DWI arrests during the weekend, Russell said.

State troopers patrolled for impaired drivers 9 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday in the Redkey District, which includes Delaware, Blackford, Grant, Jay and Randolph counties, Russell said.

"We've been having extra patrols out every weekend to reduce impaired drivers [and] to get them off the road," he said.
