One member of the Ball State University soccer team still got the gold this year, even though the team did not win the championship in the Mid-American Conference tournament.
Assistant coach Abby Richter was an assistant for Team USA in the Pan-American Maccabi Games from Dec. 27 to Dec. 31. The United States' women won the open bracket to claim the gold medal.
Team USA beat the Argentina B team 5-0 to take the gold. Team USA did not allow a goal in the tournament as it outscored its opponents 25-0 in four games.
Richter has been an assistant coach at Ball State for coach Michelle Salmon the past two seasons as Ball State won the regular season MAC titles both years. Richter assisted coach Jason Neidell, who is the Western Kentucky University coach, at the games.
It was the 11th year for the annual Pan-American Maccabi Games, which were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. More than 4,000 people from 20 countries participated in the events.
Also, junior midfielder Annie Aiello was named to the third team All-Great Lakes Region team Dec. 27 by Soccerbuzz.
Aiello was one of two MAC players to earn the honor this year and the third in Ball State history. Forward Molly Cornwell from the University of Toledo also earned the honor. Amy Holst and Krista Mitts were named to the team in 2005 and 2006 respectively for the Cardinals.
Aiello had 10 points last season, tied for fourth on the team, on five goals.
