City searches for new police chief

Chief Joe Winkle of the Muncie Police Department has not applied to be re-appointed to his position, Mayor Sharon McShurley said.

McShurley said she asked Winkle to remain as chief for 90 days until the city finds a replacement.

A committee has interviewed several candidates, she said, but it had not informed her about the applicants' identities or qualifications.

Winkle could not be reached for comment.

McShurley said there are "issues" in other city departments as well.

Chief Alan Richards of the Muncie Fire Department and Commissioner Doug Brown of the street department will also step down, McShurley said.
