Students show experiences, architecture from world travel

Trip to 25 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa lasted 100 days

Architecture students shared Monday what they learned about world cultures and architectural styles during a summer 2007 trip.

Video slide shows with upbeat music illustrated the various places, people and buildings the students saw.

About 33 students traveled with the College of Architecture and Planning to 25 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.

About 15 of the students who went on the trip, called World Tour 3, shared their experiences and what they learned.

Senior landscape architecture major Naomi Lewis said she thought the trip was a great learning experience.

"We learned all sorts of things on this trip that we will take with us for the rest of our lives," she said. "It was more than any textbooks could ever teach us. It was a once in a lifetime experience."

Graduate architecture major Kristin Andry said studying architectural styles and design was only part of the trip.

"It's one thing to look at pictures of all these amazing places," she said, "[and] it's another to be there. We actually got to see the hidden architectural jewels behind all these famous places."

Lewis said the trip, which lasted about 100 days, cost about $20,000 per student for travel and personal expenses.

About 150 students showed up to the first of two presentations Monday night.

Freshman architecture major Drew Schenk attended the presentation and said he liked the way the information was presented.

"I really loved the video slide shows," he said. "They were cool and exciting, and it was neat to see different styles of architecture around the world."
