While the Ball State University women's volleyball is 2-8 in the Mid-American Conference this season, it still has hopes of a banner year.
With six MAC matches left the Cardinals are playing to get the best possible seed in the MAC Tournament.
The better the seed, the easier the road will be to achieving a MAC tournament championship.
While coach Dave Boos acknowledges getting a good seed is important, he said it is more about having momentum.
"The tournament seed is important but I think it is more important to gain momentum for the tournament," Boos said. "We have played with everybody but haven't beaten many of them. We need that momentum."
Starting tonight the Cardinals will play the first of their last three home matches. Ball State will play Central Michigan University tonight.
Earlier this season the Cardinals lost at Central Michigan 3-0 (30-19, 30-14, 30-22).
The second of the three home matches is Saturday night against Eastern Michigan University, which the Cardinals lost 3-0 (30-24, 30-18, 30-24) six weeks ago in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Despite being swept in both matches, Boos said playing in Worthen Arena could change the outcome.
"The advantage of being at home is significant," Boos said. "These are two teams we felt we could have competed better against on the road and now we have them back here at home ... We have something like a nothing-to-lose attitude, because right now we don't have anything to lose."
Sophomore Elaina Katatolis said it's important to get as many wins as possible in the last six MAC matches because it would be a big advantage to start the MAC tournament in Worthen Arena.
"It's really important to get a win or two so we don't have to travel very far, so in the first round of the tournament we can stay here at home," she said. "It's a lot easier to win at home because you have all the fans here cheering for you."
