UPB changes Student Center into eerie mental institution

About 750 students visit 'Sunnyhaven' on Friday, Saturday

Screams echoed through the dark hallways of Ball State University's L.A. Pittenger Student Center as students made their way through the mental institution-themed haunted house Friday and Saturday.

Organizer Mike Beer said University Programs Board sponsored the event, which was titled Sunnyhaven.

About 750 students attended the weekend activity, which was more than UPB expected, he said.

The fright began as students were admitted to Sunnyhaven as patients. Throughout the maze of dark rooms and foggy hallways, other patients wandered around and advised students to get out if they could.

Jessica Porter, freshman criminal justice major, said the mental patients, portrayed by actors and UPB members, were very convincing.

"It was like going to a movie," she said.

The haunted areas spanned across the second and third levels of the building, and participants were taken on a series of elevator rides from one floor to the other.

Apprehensive participants peaked out the final doorway of the haunted house to find they were once again in the Student Center and things were back to normal.

The anticipation was the scariest part, Porter said.

"I was freaked out," she said. "I never knew what was next."

Beer said he was pleased with how the event turned out.

"Everyone that came out seemed to really enjoy themselves," he said. "It went really well."
