FIELD HOCKEY: Goalie named MAC Player of the Week

Ball State University sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday by the league office.

Shifflett made 13 saves in the Cardinals' two games last weekend, pushing her 2007 save total to 140 - fifth-highest in school history. Shifflett is nine saves away from tying June Moran for fourth place all-time and needs 14 saves to tie Kellie Rowker for third place.

She also posted two consecutive shutout halves, allowing no goals to Miami University in the second half Friday and shutting out Central Michigan University in the first half Sunday. Shifflett ranks second in the league in saves behind Missouri State University's Kim Kinsella.

Shifflett, a sophomore, played about 30 minutes last season. She was named the starting goal for this season after last year's starter Caroline Lehman retired from the Ball State team because of a back injury.

The Cardinals close their regular season Sunday at Missouri State University. The game starts at 11 a.m.
