Ball State University students wanting to network with alumni need to look no further than the Student Alumni Relations Team, Kate Webber, director of alumni and student programs, said.
Webber, who is also the St.A.R.T. adviser, said applications to join the team are due in two weeks.
"St.A.R.T. offers students an opportunity to mix and mingle with alumni in their field," Webber said. "[For example] a TCOM student here has the opportunity to meet some alumni who are also in the TCOM field."
Webber said any student graduating May 2008 or later is eligible for the team; however, students graduating this winter are not eligible because they will not have the opportunity to do much between now and graduation, she said.
Students who join St.A.R.T. will be required to attend a meeting every two weeks, Webber said. The team participates in hundreds of programs every year and participation is voluntary, she said.
St.A.R.T. President Paul Sommer said the organization discusses events it participates in at its meetings.
"At the meetings we talk about upcoming events, who's going to be at these events and who can volunteer to work the events," Sommer said.
Sommer said St.A.R.T serves as a student section of the Alumni Association. Students work at alumni events throughout the year, he said.
"It is a great opportunity for me to work with people here on campus and alumni," he said. "In a broader sense, I get to work on meeting and networking with important people."
Sommer said many of the events are directed at a certain major's alumni. St.A.R.T. knows who will be at the events and what field they are in, he said. This allows students to volunteer for events with alumni in their same field.
Webber said the two main events St.A.R.T. has every year are the senior congrats party and the finals survival kits. These events are not on a volunteer basis, and all members are expected to contribute to them, she said.
Several of the events St.A.R.T participates in are held off-campus, Sommer said. He said students who join the group will have the opportunity to travel to cities such as Indianapolis and Chicago.
"I've met people from all different areas," Sommer said, "[such as] people that can connect me to the professional world."
