SOCCER: Cardinal players earn tournament honors

Two Ball State University women's soccer players were named to the Florida Atlantic University Kickoff Classic All-Tournament team Tuesday.

Juniors Annie Aiello and Katelyn Alexander received the honor for their play in the weekend tournament, in which Ball State (2-2) finished 1-1.

The Cardinals defeated Florida Atlantic 2-1 Friday and lost to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro 1-0 Sunday.

Aiello scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the second half against Florida Atlantic to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

She had one goal all of last season and three goals her freshman season.

Alexander then had the assist on the Cardinals' game-winning goal.

It was the first assist of the season for Alexander, who led the MAC with four in 2006 prior to a season-ending foot injury.

Ball State and Florida Atlantic tied for third-most players on the all-tournament team with two each. UNC Greensboro had three players and Northwestern University set the pace with four players on the team.

Northwestern was 2-0 in the four-team tournament but did not play Ball State.

Northwestern's senior Shannon Schneeman was named the most valuable player of the tournament. She scored two unassisted goals in the Wildcats 3-2 win against UNC Greensboro, including the goals that tied and won the game.
