SGA sponsors new political series

The Student Government Association will sponsor its first Political Speaker Series 7 p.m. Wednesday at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.

SGA Treasurer Zac Davis said the year-long series would bring Indiana politicians to campus to speak about how Ball State University students can get involved with local politics. Muncie mayoral candidates James Mansfield and Sharon McShurley will each have 30 minutes to address their platform, he said. The candidates also are free to discuss other topics that affect college students such as the Brain Drain where students get an education in the state, but then leave to find jobs.

"There's an apathy that comes with our age," he said. "We're trying to give students an opportunity to see they should be involved and politics affects them and they can affect politics. [We're trying to teach] how to understand legislation and about different positions such as a mayor, local senators and national senators and governors. We're trying to do that education by bringing in different speakers."
