Panel discussion to focus on benefits of graduate school

Speakers to address transitions from the undergraduate level

Ball State University students interested in going to graduate school can attend a panel discussion 4 p.m. Wednesday in AJ 175.

Joe Goodwin, assistant director of the Career Center and coordinator of Grad School: Wanna Learn More, said the program's purpose is to talk about the transition and differences between undergraduate school and graduate school. The program also will be helpful because it advises students on how to decide and apply to graduate school, he said.

"The purpose of the program is to help students learn about researching grad programs, applying to grad school and finding financial assistance to help pay for grad school," Goodwin said.

Ball State has been presenting Grad School: Wanna Learn More for at least the past five years and is offered in the fall and spring, Goodwin said.

New panelists are selected every season to participate in Grad School: Wanna Learn More, he said. The panelists will be Robert Nowatzki representing Ball State's graduate school, Laura Needs of the student affairs administration and higher education affairs Aneta Leczyci in the counseling psychology administrators program and Christopher Naffziger a masters of business administration, he said.

Nowatzki, graduate school development coordinator and English professor at Ball State, said the panel would be able to encourage and advise undergraduates on how to get into graduate school. He said he was participating in the panel because he would like to recruit more undergraduates to graduate school.

He said graduate school is a good place for people who want to keep learning in an academic environment, and it makes students more competitive in the job market. Employers are looking for graduates with a masters or more advanced degrees compared to a person with their bachelors or associates, Nowatzki said.

Christopher Naffziger said the reason he was picked as a panelist was because of his continued education at Ball State.

"Ball State knows that I did an undergrad here as well and I am pretty active in the Miller College of Business," he said.

Naffziger's father is also a professor at Ball State, so Christopher said Ball State could just be comfortable with his family.

Naffziger said the panel will be beneficial to undergraduates because they will receive input from graduate students about making their own decisions. Graduate school is a useful tool for helping improve skills in a student's particular field, he said.

Goodwin said the program will be informal and the panelists will be asked to present their topics. After the panelists are finished with the topics, the audience will be free to ask any questions they might have, he said.
