Muncie police officer Jason Lyons was charged with two class A misdemeanors for his involvement with speeding on city and campus streets.
Delaware County Prosecutor Mike McKinney said Lyons was charged for reckless driving and interfering with reporting a crime.
A person who commits a class A misdemeanor could face up to a year in jail and no more than a $5,000 fine, according to Indiana Code.
"Those are the charges the facts supported," he said. "It doesn't matter he's a police officer criminally, but morally it might be worse."
Lyons crashed his squad car into a light pole Aug. 28 near Ball State University's LaFollette Complex. He was going 60 to 80 mph with three Ball State students in the back seat of his car. At the time of the crash, eyewitnesses said, Lyons told the women to get out of the car and leave the area.
Initially, Lyons lied about what happened and said he spilled his pop, lost control of the car and that nobody was in his car. He later confessed to what happened and was put under a 10-day paid suspension.
Muncie police chief Joe Winkle said he was aware of the charges and said he thought they were fair. Winkle said he has not spoken with Lyons since he resigned on Sept. 7.
McKinney said the court has not set an initial court date.
