A Ball State University basketball player was released on a $6,000 bond from Delaware County Justice Center at 12:51 a.m. Wednesday after being arrested on multiple charges, according to jail officials.
Junior Jalon Perryman, 20, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, minor consumption and failure to appear in court late Tuesday, according to jail officials.
Sgt. Tom Dujmovich of the Indiana State Police said Perryman was pulled over by a state trooper for a traffic violation at the intersection of Wheeling Avenue and Riggin Road.
The trooper saw an arrest warrant for Perryman's failure to appear, Dujmovich said. Once the officer placed Perryman in custody, he began to search Perryman and found prescription medication in his pocket, Dujmovich said.
"I don't know what the drug is, but it was a prescription medication he did not have permission to carry," Dujmovich said. "Any time you have a prescription medication, you're supposed to carry the prescription with you. It was just loose in his pocket."
Possession of a controlled substance is a Class D felony, according to the Indiana Code. If convicted, Perryman could receive between six months to three years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000, according to the Indiana Code.
Head coach Billy Taylor said in a statement the program does not condone Perryman's behavior. Taylor said the program will deal with the matter "immediately and internally."
Perryman started in 21 basketball games as a freshman. After former Coach Tim Buckley's removal, Perryman played for Ronny Thompson in 23 of 31 games.
Thompson began decreasing Perryman's game time, causing the player to try to transfer to another university. After Thompson resigned, Perryman decided to stay at Ball State.
