Ball State University nursing majors could have more job and clinical opportunities with the development of a new major medical facility.
Yorktown Town Council recently voted 4-0 to de-annex 27 acres of land on the southwest corner of State Road 332 and Nebo Road for development, council member Karen Pilkington said.
Roy Budd, Energize-ECI Executive Director, said a major health care facility is expanding to the outskirts of Muncie. It's a $50 million to $70 million project that will bring 150 new jobs with competitive salaries to the area, Budd said.
"It's a real big positive for economic development in East Central Indiana," he said.
Heather Hurst, third-year nursing major, said a new medical facility could offer a diverse range of opportunities for nursing school graduates and students. A new facility could offer more options for clinicals, she said.
"If it's a hospital, it could be a great opportunity for more nursing jobs," she said.
Budd said the new facility will be a complement to Ball Memorial Hospital, which is the only existing major medical facility in Muncie.
The property owners asked for the land to be de-annexed because they did not want to operate as part of two jurisdictions, Yorktown and Muncie, Pilkington said. She said the high property taxes in Muncie were also a factor.
Pilkington said she voted for the de-annexation because it would bring more jobs and boost the local economy.
