The Ball State University chapter of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity's cookout gave students the chance to meet current members and learn details about the organization.
Nitina Kolliesuah, vice president of service, said the co-ed service fraternity provided free burgers, hotdogs, chips and sodas to about 50 students Saturday at University Green.
The fraternity expected about 100 people, but members were upbeat about how the cookout went, Kolliesuah said.
Fraternity member Thomas Bennett said the organization did not have a cookout last year so members did not know what to expect.
"This is a good turnout for us," Bennett said.
Titus Austin, a senior telecommunications major, said the atmosphere at the gathering was fun and he enjoyed the food and music.
Kolliesuah said the event kicked off the fraternity's rush week, which runs through Friday.
"We wanted to have [the cookout] out in the open where everyone can see us and come find out what we're about," she said.
Kolliesuah said the event was the first of several this week, that will concentrate on recruiting new members. Anyone who wants to rush would begin a nine week process, culminating in a review. Members then vote on an applicant's admittance to the fraternity, she said.
All students are invited to attend rush-week events and are encouraged to get involved, Kolliesuah said.
Fraternity member Siare Brown said the organization's goal is at least 12 new members.
