400 attend After Glow

Late-ending movie might have caused lower attendance

A long-running film might have caused a lower than desired turnout for Ball State University's After Glow on Friday, John Huber, graduate assistant for Student Center programs, said.

Huber said he was happy with the turnout for After Glow, but more students might have attended if Friday Night Filmworks did not run so late.

About 400 Ball State University students attended the late night dance on LaFollette Field Friday, Huber said.

Event coordinators expected the students who attended Friday Night Filmworks to also attend After Glow, he said.

More than 500 Ball State University students showed up to the screening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," Huber said.

After Glow was from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday Night Filmworks began at 9 p.m. and ended after midnight, which was halfway through After Glow, Huber said.

"Most movies run only one to two hours, so the timing works out perfectly," he said. "But this one is close to three hours long, and we had a bit of overlap."

Freshman computer science major Barrett Brown said he left the film before it ended to attend the dance.

The dance featured free pizza, soda, glow necklaces and a disc jockey, Huber said.

After Glow fills a need for more social opportunities on campus, Huber said.

"We like to think of it as a warm-up for the weekend," Huber said.

Freshman journalism education major Kelli Martin said she thinks there should be more on-campus events during the weekends.

"Campus is pretty dead on the weekends," she said. "If you don't go out, there's nothing to do. Events like this give us a chance to enjoy good music and be with friends."
