Advertisements promised this year's Quad Bash would be "bigger, better, and wetter than ever," but a thunderstorm caused a change in plans for the Ball State University Programs Board on Friday.
The sun was shining until about 7:30 p.m. when the clouds rolled in. Bill Merkel, vice president of finance for UPB, said he hoped the rain would hold off during the event, but UPB was forced to move the activities and participants inside. Mike Beer, program director for UPB, said about 800 to 1,000 people showed up, but he said without the rain, he would have expected 1,800 to 2,000.
While the sun was out, the sounds of the country-western band, Shilo, echoed throughout the Quad as students climbed a rock wall, slid down a giant Slip N' Slide and drank the soda and energy drinks Dining provided.
Charlie Cardinal danced around the Quad, occasionally taking a break to lie on the lawn and socialized with participants.
Beer said this was the first year the Quad Bash featured water activities.
"The Slip N' Slide was by far the most popular," he said. "I would definitely consider bringing it back next year."
Freshman elementary education major Emily Meadors said she tried the jousting and the obstacle course.
"Beating my guy friend at jousting was my favorite thing about tonight," she said.
Ball State University alumnus Carl Frost said this was his eighth Quad Bash.
"This year there were more activities than previous years," he said.
