WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Summertime key for development

Team excited to show fans new style of play when season opens

During spring practice, first-year coach Dave Boos said the women's volleyball players have improved the way they interact and communicate with each other.

In order to make sure the team continues in the right direction, players have developed a summer plan for conditioning, weightlifting and open gym practices.

"I think a lot of us could become very comfortable to reverting back to the old style of play, and that won't cut it in the future," senior Angie Parrell, who has one year of eligibility left, said. "We need to focus on this new stuff that Dave wants us to do because that will help us be successful."

Last weekend the team ended its spring season going 1-3 at the Indiana Tournament. Boos said the spring season was not about tracking wins and losses; instead, he wanted to get players excited and build for the fall.

"It's about learning lessons," he said.

One of the biggest things the team worked on this spring was developing trust, Boos said.

"I think there's a lot of trust on this team," Parrell said. "I think that everybody feels safe when they're with each other and we feel as if we're all equals with each other."

Having greater trust has also helped team chemistry, which both Parrell and senior-to-be Brittany May said is the highest it's been in years.

Boos has also been able to help the team with his expertise. May said because Boos is a detail-oriented coach, he has an answer for everything that goes wrong, which allows players to build on specific circumstances.

"I've learned so much about volleyball with Dave in the past couple months he's been here than I've ever learned before," May said. "I feel like I know more about the game and how it works rather than just going out and playing."

Both May and Parrell said the team will be one that improves every match as it gets comfortable with new styles of play.

"There's so many new things we're learning from Dave that we can only get better with every day we practice," Parrell said. "I think that the opportunity for this team to excel is going to be so big."
