Students play childhood games

Pi Beta Phi sorority's annual Arrow Games week ends tonight

Ball State University greek members will jump rope, play four square, hula hoop and participate in other childhood games 7 p.m. at Irving Gym as part of Pi Beta Phi sorority's ninth annual Arrow Games.

The sorority's week of events also included euchre and poker tournaments, a four-on-four basketball tournament and a volleyball tournament, Arrow Games chairwoman Katie Bills said. More than 150 people have attended the events during the week, she said.

"This year we have had more people participate," Bills said. "With each year the numbers continue to grow, and overall the general attitude seems to be out there to win for individual groups, and the competition is strong. They're competing as if it was any other competition, and then at the end, they shake hands and all go back to being friends."

Pi Beta Phi President Asher Lisec said last year the games raised $2,500 in sponsors and team fees. The amount raised was the third largest in the country, and Pi Beta Phi was on the way to surpassing that total this year, she said.

"All the proceeds go to different literacy foundations throughout the U.S., but we focus most of our money on the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn.," Lisec said.

According to the Arrowmont Web site, the school has week-long and weekend workshops throughout the year to teach children and adults about different areas of study such as ceramics, painting, woodworking, photography and more.

Bills said the week of events was to help people relax and have a good time before finals. This is the first time Pi Beta Phi has done childhood games, she said.

"In the past we've seen that not a lot of people are interested in [karaoke], so we decided to try something new and make it fun," Bills said. "We're hoping to have all '80s and '90s music to blast us back to the times when we were in elementary school and could just go out on the playground, have a good time and not have a lot to worry about."
