Joe Gunn, a fourth-year Ball State University student, won't have to buy shampoo anytime soon after he shaved his head to raise money to fight Neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumors that can form anywhere in the body.
The theatre and dance performance major let his hair grow for a year - until Thursday. Gunn offered chunks of his hair for $10 a piece while passing out information about NF. Joining the University Program Board and the ultimate Frisbee team at the Scramble Light, Gunn was able to attract enough donations to more than double his initial goal of $100. He collected $165.08 at the Scramble Light, and another $41 was raised online.
"I'm happy with the result, but to me it's more about spreading awareness," Gunn said.
Gunn and his friends, who helped distribute information about NF and collect donations, were at the Scramble Light on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gunn will run in the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati in May with the Children's Tumor Foundation marathon team, and the money from Thursday's fundraiser and the marathon will go toward research funds for NF.
Wendy Levine, NF marathon coordinator for the CTF, said she was excited about Gunn's results.
