Senate to vote on core curriculum plan

New requirements could go into effect by start of Fall 2008

Ball State University students could be responsible for fulfilling a new set of University Core Curriculum requirements as soon as Fall 2008.

University Senate's core curriculum subcommittee spent last semester reviewing the complex proposal for a new University Core Curriculum, UCC-21, and is expected to vote on the plan soon. University Senate chairman Bruce Hozeski said the committee is reviewing amendments to the proposed UCC-21.

Juli Eflin, University Core Curriculum Task Force II chairwoman, said these amendments address worries about the plan.

"There's a concern that in the proposal, there's no requirement for technological literacy," she said. "There's a concern that there's no requirement for understanding American culture and American politics."

Other people are concerned that there's not a requirement for interdisciplinary work within UCC-21, she said.

UCC-21 still has several stages to go through before it can be implemented, Hozeski said.

First, the core curriculum subcommittee must pass the proposal. It then moves up to the undergraduate education committee for vote. If it passes, the Faculty Council will vote on it. If it passes this point, University Senate as a whole will vote on UCC-21. If the plan is passed in the next four months, UCC-21 would be ready to implement in Fall 2008, Eflin said.

"I'd love to see it ready for the 2008 catalog," she said. "If it could get through Senate this coming semester, we could do it."

After clearing University Senate, the plan has to be approved by President Jo Ann Gora.

Hozeski said it was likely UCC-21 would eventually be implemented.

"There's a great deal of general support, but there are a couple of naysayers," he said

A plan for a new core curriculum has been in progress since 2003, when former Provost Beverly Pitts made room for faculty to work on the core curriculum, Eflin said.
