A Dodge pickup truck's engine erupted in flames, damaging a Ball State University student's Chevy Montecarlo at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the LaFollette Complex parking lot.
The flames burned the Dodge's engine compartment, hood and windshield. Sgt. John Foster of the Ball State Police Department said the heat from the flame also damaged the vehicle's interior.
The Dodge's owner, Muncie resident Rhett Scott, could not be immediately reached for comment.
Freshman Brian Warden was parked in front of the truck and said the Dodge's paint melted onto the back of his Chevy.
Foster said the cause of the fire is unknown.
Warden said he packed his vehicle to go home and was waiting for a friend while parked in a parallel parking spot on the south end of LaFollette when the Dodge pulled in behind him and began to smoke. When Scott opened the hood, the truck was on fire, Warden said.
"It was all flames," he said. "I thought it was going to explode."
Foster said nobody was injured, and according to the owners, both vehicles were insured.
