With three second-to-last-place finishes in its last four tournaments, the Ball State University men's golf team will try to gain momentum Saturday at the First Energy Intercollegiate before the Mid-American Conference Championships May 3-5.
Joining 16 teams, the Cardinals will compete against MAC teams University of Akron, Bowling Green State University, Eastern Michigan University, Miami University, Northern Illinois University and Ohio University.
The 54-hole tournament is a par-72 and will be played at the Firestone Golf Club in Akron, Ohio. The course covers 7,125 yards.
The Cardinals won this tournament last year, finishing 10 under par, and were runners-up in 2005.
Because of that success, coach Mike Fleck said he is looking forward to the weekend.
"The guys that have played here before feel pretty comfortable about the golf course," Fleck said. "We are going to see six of the MAC schools a week before the championships and it will be good to play on a course we've had success at and against teams that we will see again."
Wayne Denger, C.D. Hockersmith and Andy Skillman have experience at Firestone and will compete this weekend. Ben Lakoff, Brian Maurer and Ross Cosat will play today in a playoff to determine the last two team members. The other golfer will compete individually.
"Our confidence is pretty high going into the tournament," Hockersmith said. "With Andy, Wayne and myself having played at this course before, we have a lot of confidence. We like the course and the newer guys match up well. We are excited and we want to win."
Although Fleck said he struggled to find five consistent players to compete this season, he believes the Cardinals are coming together at the right time.
