The Ball State University baseball team hits the road today to play a non-conference game in South Bend.
The Cardinals play the University of Notre Dame today and then take a two-day break before resuming the Mid-American Conference portion of their schedule.
The Fighting Irish are 21-18 on the season, including 12-5 at home. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 15-24 and 7-12 on the road.
Notre Dame is led by Brett Lilley offensively. Lilley has a .371 batting average in 39 games and has scored 41 runs on the season. Overall the Irish are hitting .289, 24 points above Ball State's season average of .265.
Matt Stoeklen leads the Cardinals offensively. He has a .319 average with four home runs and 26 RBIs in 37 games.
Eric Earnhart is the only other Cardinal starter with a batting average above .300. He has scored 24 times and has nine stolen bases with a .303 batting average in 26 games this season.
Coming into the game Ball State closer Kyle Heyne has 23 saves in his career, one behind all-time leader Ron Schrock. Heyne has a 3.28 ERA and a 2-3 record with nine saves this season.
Overall the Cardinals have a 5.29 ERA, 1.74 higher than the Irish's 3.55 team ERA.
When the Cardinals resume play in the MAC they will be in Kalamazoo, Mich., to take on Western Michigan University in a three-game weekend series.
