WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State splits pair of MAC matches

Freshman Stromberg only player to win both singles matches

With Ball State University having already clinched the doubles point in Sunday's match with the University of Akron, Sophie Quist and Haly Calderwood didn't have much to worry about in their doubles match.

However, they showed some resolve by battling back from a 6-4 deficit to take their match 8-7 in a third-set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Quist and Calderwood were in command, breaking a 1-1 tie by scoring five straight points and winning it 7-2. The victory set the tone for a 7-0 Ball State [6-8, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) victory.

It was a reversal of fortune from Friday when the University at Buffalo downed the Cardinals 6-1.

"One of the things we talk about is that every player you play steps up their game at certain times," coach Kathy Bull said. "We call it answering back. Today we answered back better."

Against Akron, Calderwood defeated Jenna Larson in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Quist and Pollack each won the first set, lost the second set, and won the third set in a super tiebreaker. Quist defeated Tanya Gombera 10-7 and Pollack dropped Amy Sherlock 10-3.

Christine Stromberg won both singles matches this weekend. With a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) victory over Buffalo's Natalie Dean and a 6-4, 6-1 win against Akron's Lindsey Berry, Stromberg pushed her record to 11-3.

Stromberg said she was able to reverse her fortune against Dean by cutting out unforced errors.

"I just attacked a little bit more,' Stromberg said. "I zeroed in on her backhand and my serve started going in a little bit more and I started using that as a weapon."
