VOLLEYBALL: Meyer earns men's Player of the Week honors

Outside attacker Nick Meyer was named the Division I-II Men's Volleyball Player of the Week Monday.

During the weekend, Meyer led the No. 15 Ball State University men's volleyball team with 51 kills in wins against George Mason University and No. 11 Pacific University.

"It's a great individual honor for Nick," coach Joel Walton said. "It's the kind of honor one gets but recognizes a nice team achievement of what happened last weekend."

After 25 kills against George Mason, Meyer had a match-high 26 kills, including six kills in game five, and two of the Cardinals' four aces against Pacific.

This season Meyer has a team-high 23 aces and averages 4.42 kills per game, fifth most in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.

Meyer is the eighth player in school history to win this award and the first since Keith Schunzel in 2004.

Walton said Meyer winning was impressive because Ball State was without outside attackers Todd Chamberlain and Billy Ebel this weekend. Chamberlain is serving a 30-day team suspension and Ebel didn't play against Pacific because of an ankle injury.

"It's a rewarding thing for Nick since the burden on his shoulders had increased because we didn't have a full team," Walton said. "And he stepped up instead of buckling under the pressure."
